The primary bathroom is the one people are most likely to over-fixture and under-plan. Done right, it's the room in the house that most improves the start of your day.
Planning a primary bathroom that works at 6am
Fixtures are the easy part. What determines whether you like the room is a set of unglamorous decisions:
- Two people, one room, same time. A double vanity with genuine separation, and the toilet in its own compartment if the footprint allows.
- Lighting you can dim. Bright vanity light for getting ready, and a low circuit for the middle of the night. Vertical sconces beside a mirror light a face far better than a downlight above it.
- Storage that isn't just under the sink. A tall linen cabinet, drawers rather than doors, and outlets inside a drawer for hair tools.
- Heated floor. Small cost during a tile job, disproportionate daily payoff, and it dries the floor between uses.
- A shower big enough for two shower heads to make sense. If it isn't, one good shower head beats two mediocre ones.
Showers worth building
The shower is the centre of a modern primary bathroom, and a handful of decisions separate a good one from an expensive disappointment:
- Curbless entry reads best and is the most accessible, but needs the floor recessed — straightforward on a raised floor, more involved on a slab.
- Frameless glass is templated after tiling and fabricated to your opening. Budget for 1 to 2 weeks between tile and glass.
- A niche in the right place — set into a wall the water doesn't blast directly, sized to actual bottles, waterproofed as carefully as the pan.
- A bench, if the shower is deep enough, built as part of the structure and waterproofed with it.
- Thermostatic valves so the temperature doesn't swing when a toilet flushes elsewhere in the house.

It looks better, cleans easier and it's the accessible option if you plan to stay in the house. The catch is the floor build-up — you need to recess the substrate to keep the drain below finished floor level. On a raised timber floor that's straightforward. On a slab it means cutting and re-pouring, which we'll price honestly.
Electric under-tile mats draw very little because a bathroom floor is small and they're thermostatically controlled. The cost is in the install, and it's only sensible to do while the floor is already open — retrofitting later means removing the tile you just paid for.
A comfortable double-vanity bathroom with a separate shower generally starts around 9 to 11 square metres. Below that, something has to give, and we'd usually rather give up the tub than compress the shower or the vanity.
