Choosing a material you'll still like in ten years
Nearly every countertop conversation comes down to a trade-off between how it looks, how much maintenance you'll tolerate, and what it costs. Almost nobody regrets the look they chose. People do regret the maintenance they signed up for without realising it.
The single most useful question: are you the kind of household that wipes up a spilled glass of red wine immediately, or the kind that finds it in the morning? That answer rules half the materials in or out before you've looked at a single slab.
What we install
We fabricate and fit the full range of engineered and natural stone, plus porcelain and timber:
- Quartz — engineered, non-porous, no sealing. The default for busy family kitchens.
- Granite — natural, very heat-tolerant, needs occasional sealing. Enormous variation between slabs.
- Quartzite — natural stone with a marble look and granite-level hardness. The premium choice, and priced accordingly.
- Marble — unmatched for looks; etches with anything acidic. Beautiful, and only for people who accept a patina.
- Soapstone — soft, dark, heat-proof, ages with a patina. Oiled rather than sealed.
- Limestone, calcite, sandstone and onyx — specialist naturals, generally for islands, bars and feature areas rather than a full working perimeter.
- Porcelain slab — extremely hard, UV-stable, thin profile. Excellent for outdoor kitchens.
- Butcher block — warm, repairable, needs oiling; often used on an island against stone elsewhere.

Templating, fabrication and fitting
Most of the quality in a countertop job is decided before the stone arrives at your house.
- Templating happens after the cabinets are set and level — never before. We digitally template the actual boxes in your kitchen, not the drawing.
- Seam placement is planned with you. Seams are unavoidable on longer runs; where they land is a choice, and we put them where they're least visible rather than where they're most convenient to cut.
- Slab layout matters enormously on natural stone. For dramatic veining we lay out the cuts against the actual slab so the pattern runs where you want it — particularly on waterfall ends, where the veining should continue down the side.
- Fitting is usually a single day. We disconnect and reconnect the plumbing, remove the old tops, set and seam the new ones, and fit the sink.
Edges, backsplashes and waterfalls
Details that cost little at order stage and change how the finished kitchen reads:
- Edge profile — eased and mitred edges read modern; ogee and bullnose read traditional. A mitred edge that makes a 20mm slab look 60mm thick is the most requested detail we fit.
- Full-height backsplash — running the same stone from counter to wall cabinets instead of tile. More expensive, far easier to clean, and it makes a small kitchen feel considered.
- Waterfall island end — the stone turns 90 degrees and runs to the floor. Needs veining matched across the mitre to look right.
- Undermount sinks — standard with any stone. The reveal (how much rim shows) is a choice; a zero-reveal install is cleanest and is what we default to.

Yes, and it's one of the highest-return jobs in a kitchen. New stone against existing cabinets transforms the room for a fraction of a remodel. Two caveats: the existing cabinets have to be level and structurally sound, and you'll want new sink and tap at the same time because the old ones rarely fit the new cut-out cleanly.
Templating takes about an hour. Fabrication is typically 1 to 2 weeks. Installation is usually a single day, and you'll have a working sink again that evening. We ask you to clear the counters and empty the sink base cabinet before we arrive.
Neither is better; they fail differently. Quartz never needs sealing and is more consistent from slab to slab, which makes it the safer choice for a busy kitchen. Granite handles heat far better and no two slabs are identical, which is exactly why some people prefer it. If you want zero maintenance, quartz. If you want a surface with real character and you'll seal it occasionally, granite.
We can usually work to it, though be aware that removing old countertops almost always damages the bottom row of an existing tile backsplash. It's worth budgeting to redo the backsplash at the same time rather than hoping for the best — a patched bottom row is visible from across the room.
